Expert tips for moving
What is a commercial vehicle
Generally speaking, if you want to hire a commercial vehicle in Hobart you’re looking for something bigger than a car such as a 4WD, truck, ute, van or other specialty vehicle whose primary purpose is the transportation of goods or people
Licence
Any vehicle that weighs less than three tonnes or that can carry a maximum of 12 people can be hired with a regular full Tasmanian driving licence. With bigger and heavier vehicles you will need a Light Rigid, Medium Rigid, or Heavy Rigid licence.
Driving
Most trucks and vans are bigger than a regular passenger car, and in some cases the vehicle’s additional height means you might not be able to drive the same route you would in a regular car. Watch out for low bridges, tight corners, hair-pin bends, and other narrow roads.
Ute or van
Utes are well suited to large boxes of mixed sizes while vans, thanks to their enclosed roof, have a fixed limit on the height and width of the load. When you are comparing a similar-sized van and ute, you’ll almost certainly fit more into a ute — but it won’t be as well protected from a rainy day in Hobart.
